'A Californian Great Horned Owl Family'
This large old reclaimed wooden box is lovingly filled with many tiny hand-crafted and sculpted details. It is an ode to the beauty of the woods and meadows close to home. It is filled with all native California flora and fungi and is resident to a family of great horned owls, a mother and her three owlets. Listening to great horned owls softly hooting from the trees to one another during the evening hours has been one of my favorite peaceful things. I will be moving out of California later this year, and this piece—and I’m sure more to come—is my love letter to the land I have lived and loved my whole life.
Materials & Measurements:
Hand-sculpted and painted great horned owl mother and her owlets
Owls were made from stone clay, polymer clay, acrylic paint and down feathers from my dear parrot Lily's natural molting. Moths have been known to eat down feathers like these so if moths inhabit the space this piece will be displayed, protecting it with a glass dome or glass cabinet is recommended.
Each of the flowers were crafted from paper, wire and paint
They are each California natives:
california tree poppy {romneya coulteri}, california manroot {marah fabacea}, california poppy {eschscholzia californica}, and baby blue eyes {nemophila menziesii}
Dried and slightly painted moss and collected from around my property
A hollow lichen covered wood branch as the tree nest, also foraged from around my home!
Old reclaimed wooden shadowbox
Measurements: 7" L x 6" W x 13" H
One of a kind - lovingly crafted by artist Alexis Savopoulos
The sale of this art piece will contribute to planting twenty trees around the world through onetreeplanted.org
